Production Manager

The Production Manager will work across two family owned businesses to deliver the diverse production requirements of each, overseeing Propagation and Stock Plant management, to cost effectively supply a product to a professional standard. The main growing sites of each business neighbour each other; in addition each has a number of satellite sites in the local area. The total growing area across both businesses is in excess of 25 acres, producing circa 5 million pots per year. The Propagation Teams are responsible for producing 60% of total production. The total number of staff across both businesses is circa 84, the number of people reporting directly to the Production Manager (Propagation) is up to 10 propagation staff, whilst liaising with other managers across the business.

 

Responsibilities

Propagation and Stock Plants:

  • Effectively manage both Propagation Teams, systems and resources, to provide the required number and quality of rooted plugs on time, and free from pest, disease, weeds and liverwort
  • Managing the quality and timing of all seed sowing, pricking out, taking and sticking of cuttings and care of bought in young plant material for use by Propagation
  • Determine and grow correct quantity of stock plants from elite or selected material to produce the necessary number of cuttings, at the right time, required by the Propagation Schedules
  • Ensuring that all activities to control growing environments are carried out in such a manner as to produce plants cost effectively and to the timing and quality required, for example heating, ventilation, watering, movement of crops between environments
  • Ensuring correct manipulation of stock to ensure timings are achieved ‚?? through trimming, feeding and use of environmental controls
  • In consultation with Grower/Production Managers, reviewing and trialling of techniques and assisting with the ongoing development and improvement of crop schedules
  • Working with Operational and Production/Grower Managers and Teams to ensure clear communication on work plans and activity issues (e.g. gathering propagation material from production batches), to enable effective rescheduling of tasks and allocation of staff
  • Continually improve the efficiency of the propagation process by monitoring activity and efficacy
  • Investigate, cost and propose improvements to systems or equipment
  • Giving technical propagation support, including monitoring and continually improving systems of work and processes
  • Adhere to health and safety practices
  • ¬†Knowledge of computer software

Personal Specification

  • Organisational skills: the ability to keep a number of tasks live at any one time
  • Leadership: the ability to direct others effectively to achieve goals
  • Ability to work as part of a management team
  • IT: good Microsoft Excel skills and the ability to create and manipulate data using, for example,
  • PIVOT tables
  • Technical: Qualification in commercial Horticulture to a minimum of Level 3, or equivalent
  • Management training
  • Ability to question own work in order to search out answers
  • Full UK Driving Licence, and access to own vehicle
  • A number of years of relevant industry experience
  • First Aid certificate holder
  • Member of IPPS
  • PA1 certification
